The buildings here are at the hanger end of Chrissy Field where
the torpedo test ramp is (presumably for shore launching test torpedo's - that
probably got exciting!). The big white house used to be the Coast Guard
station with the Commandant's house next to it - the station was not popular
apparently because there is no harbor - there was a fixed dock and when the tide
was low, the men had to swing out onto the boats via knotted ropes - or climb
back up if they were returning to base. The current station is across the
gate near the base of the bridge with a protected break water and harbor. |
