Ok - bitten by Kodak again...  This is Trajan's column which is the single largest graven column in history - it tells the story of Trajan's rule.  On top is St. Peter with his keys to the church.  This was the top of Trajan's market place, which now is mostly foundations but borders the Forum and the Collosseo
