{"id":204,"date":"2015-04-12T11:20:16","date_gmt":"2015-04-12T11:20:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/?p=204"},"modified":"2015-04-25T15:46:35","modified_gmt":"2015-04-25T15:46:35","slug":"the-post-where-i-do-some-bragging-about-my-sister-in-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/2015\/04\/12\/the-post-where-i-do-some-bragging-about-my-sister-in-law\/","title":{"rendered":"The post where I do some bragging&#8230;  About my Sister-in-Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I think my whole family is just chocka-block full of great people &#8211; but today, I want to do a little timely bragging about my SiL Tenley.<\/p>\n<p>She started a photography business 3 years ago with a vision of combining good old hard work, professionalism, networking and business acumen with something she enjoyed and was good at &#8211; photography. \u00a0I may mess some of this up &#8211; so all mistakes are mine &#8211; but the journey started with some technical photography classes and a camera. \u00a0Tenley is NOT\u00a0the photographer you see wandering around with <a href=\"http:\/\/svphoto.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Cotton-Carrier-Vest-System-with-Back-Pack.jpg\">65 pounds of lenses, $20,000 dollar camera bodies with a back pack, vest pack and belt packs<\/a> &#8211; she uses her eye instead to get the shot she wants.<\/p>\n<p>She has been both having fun and has steadily been building\u00a0a profitable business with a diverse local clientele. \u00a0Till now that is, because she has broken out and gone national &#8211; as in National Geographic national !<\/p>\n<p>One of Tenley&#8217;s photos caught Nat Geo&#8217;s eye while they were researching for their new book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Abroad-Home-International-Experiences-America\/dp\/1426214995\">Abroad at Home: \u00a0The 600 Best International Travel Experiences in North America<\/a>\u00a0 The put two of her of her local photos in the book &#8211; including one on the cover! \u00a0The scallops on the cover is her photo. \u00a0They also included the iconic windmill that is the central touchpoint of her town &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solvang,_California\">Solvang CA<\/a> \u00a0(from wikipedia &#8211; the short explanation of what Solvang is &#8211; the attraction for Abroad at Home is a natural: <em>\u00a0&#8220;Solvang was founded in 1911 on almost 9,000 acres (3,600\u00a0ha) of the <a title=\"Rancho San Carlos de Jonata\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rancho_San_Carlos_de_Jonata\">Rancho San Carlos de Jonata<\/a> Mexican land grant, by a group of Danes who traveled west to establish a Danish colony far from the midwestern winters. The city is home to a number of bakeries, restaurants, and merchants offering a taste of <a title=\"Denmark\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Denmark\">Denmark<\/a> in California.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Santa Ynez valley is a wonderful mix of earth, food and wine &#8211; old time ranches mixed in with new wineries and great weather. \u00a0That she got picked up to represent the local area is just great. \u00a0I am even more proud of her taking the opportunity that this represented and getting others involved &#8211; a book launch party with the local bookstore &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookloftsolvang.com\/\">The Book Loft <\/a>\u00a0(where they sold a LOT of copies of the book) and an event with the restaurant (brain lock &#8211; I can&#8217;t remember their name &#8211; sorry!) where she did the scallops photo shoot &#8211; and other events as well &#8211; a whirl wind.<\/p>\n<p>The book and her contribution has also been picked up locally and nationally<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.weather.com\/tv\/shows\/weekend-recharge\/video\/travel-the-world-without-leaving-the-us?sf8179171=1\">The Weather Channel did a short video interview<\/a> with the author and one of her photos is featured at 0:50 mark (complete with prominent photo credit &#8211; woot!)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.galesburg.com\/article\/20150319\/BLOGS\/150319714\/2070\">Jay Redfern of the Galesburg Register-Mail<\/a>\u00a0(Galesburg Illinois) did a full interview of Tenley (who grew up in Galesburg before moving to Solvang)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/avantwines.com\/\">Terravant Winery<\/a> held a <a href=\"http:\/\/avantwines.com\/nat-geo-tenley-fohl\/\">release party and book signing<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/jetsettimes.com\/2015\/03\/14\/how-this-wine-country-photographer-caught-national-geographics-attention\/\">Jetset Times did a story and interview <\/a>of Tenley and her work<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.com\/news\/2015\/mar\/12\/good-reads-emabroad-homeem\/\">The Santa Barbara Independent picked up on the book<\/a> in their review section and the launch party<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/galleries\/2015\/03\/15\/the-foreign-wonders-in-your-backyard-photos.html\">The Daily Beast put her photo of the Windmill<\/a> in downtown Solvang front and center<\/li>\n<li>The Santa Ynez Valley News interviewed Tenley as well &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/syvnews.com\/entertainment\/books-and-literature\/seeing-the-valley-through-tenley-fohl-s-lens\/article_65080920-6f8b-596a-8490-1f3b95027374.html\">Seeing the Valley Through Tenley Fohl&#8217;s Lens<\/a> \u00a0&#8211; grin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good job Tenley (and faithful Igor\/minion &#8211; Pete). \u00a0The fully rounded approach of craft and business is just great stuff. \u00a0Woot-Woot!<\/p>\n<p>Oh &#8211; and I have a permanent plug to her website on the right bar of this blog &#8211;
