Precipitation (rain or snow) was not in the forecasts that I noticed.  About 5 or 6 inches of Goose Down light fluffy powder. Franklin Wood Stove in the background and tool storage\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>My Dad is not really doing much furniture or sculpture at the moment &#8211; what he does do quite a bit of is laying things out to look at them, and work on them. \u00a0 Various equipment repairs and hammering on things too. \u00a0In order to free up room, we are thinking of moving some of this out and over to my shop. \u00a0I was planning on getting a number of basics that are duplications of what my Dad has &#8211; and will probably still do so, but this way, the things that are not used often and are in the way on South Street, can move over to Bedford road and be available as needed after a short drive. \u00a0This will save me, in some cases, from having to make some expensive purchases (or hard to find equipment) so it will be a win-win.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>current<\/em> <em>thoughts<\/em> are the welding equipment, the gas forge (which my Dad doesn&#8217;t like as much as his coal forge) and the metal lathe would move over. \u00a0These take up a LOT of floor space and in some cases haven&#8217;t been used in over 10+ years.<\/p>\n<p>My Dad got kind of excited that I was interested in doing this and he dug up his old paperwork on the metal lathe (a South Bend 9&#8243; model). \u00a0It is not the oldest piece of equipment in the shop (some of the blacksmith gear is really people old) but it is about 80 years young. \u00a0He purchased it from Atherton Loring Jr, who bought it new from Woodcraft Supply in 1935 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.woodcraft.com\/\">Woodcraft sells great stuff still &#8211; a definite &#8216;go to&#8217; supplier<\/a>) \u00a0 A metal lathe is a great tool &#8211; one of the few tools that is capable of replicating itself (ie &#8211; it can make all the parts needed to build another lathe from scratch). \u00a0South Bend was an interesting company, they were\u00a0a world dominating precision instrument manufacturer from the early 1900s to the 1950&#8217;s and the 9&#8243; lathe was a signature piece of equipment for them.<\/p>\n<p>My Dad purchased this from Mr. Loring in the 1970s. \u00a0He passed away in 1977. \u00a0The original purchase price was $159.30 in 1935 &#8211; which was a fair amount of money in the middle of the Great Depression. \u00a0It has been very well cared for ever since and is in great shape. \u00a0It should easily have another 80 years in it. \u00a0It will likely be very handy when I get to working on restoring\/reconditioning the <a href=\"http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/2015\/07\/08\/santa-rosa-fohls-visit-carlisle\/\">Myers Self-Oiling Water Pump that I picked up &#8211; click link for more details<\/a> &#8211; currently it is sitting under a hunk of plastic and covered in snow.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-4 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin: auto;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-4 .gallery-item {\n\t\t\t\tfloat: left;\n\t\t\t\tmargin-top: 10px;\n\t\t\t\ttext-align: center;\n\t\t\t\twidth: 33%;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-4 img {\n\t\t\t\tborder: 2px solid #cfcfcf;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-4 .gallery-caption {\n\t\t\t\tmargin-left: 0;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t\/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes\/media.php *\/\n\t\t<\/style>\n\t\t<div id='gallery-4' class='gallery galleryid-833 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/2016\/01\/18\/happy-mlk-day-a-three-day-weekend-leads-to-workshop-design-thoughts\/atherton_loring_jr_0001\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Atherton_Loring_JR_0001-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-4-827\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt>\n\t\t\t\t<dd class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-4-827'>\n\t\t\t\tnote the pre-filled date in the upper right hand corner assumes the purchase order was in the 1920&#8217;s &#8211; waste not, want not\n\t\t\t\t<\/dd><\/dl><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/2016\/01\/18\/happy-mlk-day-a-three-day-weekend-leads-to-workshop-design-thoughts\/atherton_loring_receipt_0001\/'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/sixthelement.org\/wordpress1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Atherton_Loring_receipt_0001-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-4-828\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt>\n\t\t\t\t<dd class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-4-828'>\n\t\t\t\tTotal kit out was a bit less than $160 dollars. Benson, American.  1862-1951.  &#8220;One of the leaders of the so-called Boston School, Frank Benson specialized in figural subjects posed in idealized interiors and outdoor settings.  The bucolic background in this painting is the artist&#8217;s invention.
