A Mishoon is a boat that has been made from a single tree, using a slow, controlled burning process to hollow it out. The technique is to burn the center into charcoal and scrape it out. The display here is really interesting, the boat was made for the museum in the traditional way and they have a linear photo display (that didn’t come out great in my photos, so I didn’t load it) as it was made and then used.
This is a two man boat – historical records have them going up in size to hold 40 men. Captain John Smith in 1606 recorded the large ones could be paddled faster than their rowed barges
